Vermont Craft Mead
Vermont Craft Mead, better known by our two brands, Groennfell Meadery and Havoc Mead, is a proudly Woman-Owned, Woman-Operated, Certified B Corp nestled in an industrial park in Saint Albans, VT.
Founded in 2013 by Kelly Klein and her husband Ricky, Groennfell Meadery was one of the first craft-only meaderies in the world.
A few years later, we began a second brand, Havoc Mead (more on that below).
Since our founding, we have done Renaissance Faires, Comicons, and Harvest Festivals. We ran a restaurant we affectionately called Colchester's Mead Hall, and we've catered Viking weddings.
We've loved all of it, but at this point we focus primarily on making good mead that's enjoyed around the world.
Our Mission
The world has forgotten how to feast.
We believe that a feast is a space set apart from daily life where people feel that they are part of something bigger than themselves, surrounded by food, drink, and revelry.
We are proud of the meads we make, of course, but in all that we do, we remember that we are in the business of feasting.
Why We Have Two Mead Brands
When we started Groennfell Meadery, we had essentially no competition in the craft mead market. We kept expecting someone to come along and make mead in cans, but we waited for years with no one to share the shelf with us!
Finally, a few years after we founded, we split our product line into Groennfell with its historically-inspired meads and Havoc Mead where we get to do a deep dive into the American craft tradition. They're all brewed by the same team, we just use the rules we've established to help us be more creative.
How We Feast
As a triple bottom line company:
We believe that honest and accurate sales information combined with exceptional products are the only way to build the trust of our consumers and sustainably grow the profits of the company. Money is power, so we strive to acquire and use ours ethically.
We believe that all of our decisions as a company and as individuals can have an impact on the environment, so we educate ourselves and others to make sustainable choices. Our relationship with pollinators (bees) uniquely enables us to use our line of products to have a positive impact on the wider environment.
We believe that our employees are the foundation of who we are as a company. So, happy, healthy staff isn’t just a goal, it’s a nonnegotiable. We also remember that we are part of a larger community of individuals and businesses which call for mutual support.
Certification Symbols on Each Can
There are lots of little logos on every one of our cans which represent certifications we've received. Here's a quick breakdown of what each of them means.
Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.
We are a Triple Bottom Line Company supporting People, Planet, and Prosperity. You can learn more at B Labs International.
We are an independent, woman-owned, woman-operated brewhouse, which is pretty cool and very rare.

Not only is 100% of our electricity supplied by our solar array, we also use Renewable Natural Gas making us a 100% renewably-powered operation.
You can learn more about Renewable Natural Gas at US Dept. of Energy and you can learn about our solar partner, SunCommon, at SunCommon.com.
Due to a strange Federal law from the early 20th century, we're actually required to be a gluten-free facility.
We aren't even allowed to accept deliveries of products containing gluten into our production facility, which is kind of weird when you think about it.
